Bocas del Toro is the Panamanian Caribbean. The Bocas located at the western end of the nation, just 40 kilometers – the Republic of Costa Rica.

This archipelago is the perfect combination between nature and cultural, historical traditions with captivating ocean species, coral reefs, mangroves, tropical forests, pristine beaches, forests accompanied disturbing all imaginable kinds of flora and fauna.

Undoubtedly the most celebrated visitor was Christopher Columbus, on October 6, 1502, on his fourth and last voyage. I walk with two caravels to a wide bay that the Indians called “Carabao” today bay of “Admiral” stocked up on food supplies in the current island “Bastimentos” and repair the career of one of his ships on the neighboring island of “Carenero .”

In the early nineteenth century came the Snapp brothers Jamaica with their slaves, along with Shepperd Shepperd who peopled Island. The built the first Overwater Bungalows Panama A few years later excuses and several English families migrated from the islands of San Andres and Providencia, also with his slaves, to avoid paying taxes. Started a big trade with the settlers Indians of the region, which bartered live turtles, hawksbill, cocoa and mahogany especially with the English of Jamaica.

For all this, Bocas del Toro has a rich ethnic culture, reflected travel traditions, customs, gastronomy, music, dances and other demonstrations; combined with the indigenous culture that remains intact and magically transports us to the roots of the American continent.

Bocas del Toro, his name:

It is not known for sure where it came from and the name of this incredible archipelago lost in time. There are several functions, one more interesting than the other. Cristobal Colon says when descended on one of its beautiful beaches; several waterfalls observed shaped “bull mouths.”
Others say that Columbus spotted a cliff on the island of Bastimentos (clearly observable at present), which presents the form of a bull lying.
It is also said that the sound of the huge waves hitting the rocks of the volcanic origin of the island of Bastimentos resemble the lowing of a bull.
On the other hand, there are those who say the last cacique of the region was known as “Boka Toro.”
